At First, I thought I'd want a 3.2 Carrera or a 964 or even a 993, but those will be harder to find in the future I reckon...Figure I'd go with something more modern and more available. :)

1. 6MT

2. Yes and no. It was my DD for over a year. Now I switch off between it and my E90 M3. I was going to sell the E46 M3 so I wasn't putting many miles on it. But I've become attached to it so I'm driving it more. So right now I'm splitting miles on all 3. The 997 is my fav for driving around town and taking road trips. The M3s are better for being stuck in bad traffic or driving on really crappy roads.

3. Yes. I'm lucky and live in So Cal. So we don't really have one of those "winter" things. It allows me to go all RWD and not have a car with high ground clearance.

4. My average changes based on how hard I'm driving. But overall it's very, very good. I can get high teens in the city even when stepping on it now and then. And I can get mid to high 20s on the highway if there isn't traffic. It's an efficient little sucker. It's the Prius of N/A 300+ HP sports cars.

5. Totally fine when driving on asphalt. God awful when driving on bad concrete or when there are a lot of potholes. I don't have PASM. I think PASM would have helped on bad roads since the car has a short wheelbase and rigid chassis. I don't mind the ride at all around town, I kind of like how stiff it is for short drives. But it does get tiring when commuting in places like LA that have terrible roads and bad traffic. The upside is that the stiff ride and short wheelbase make the car handle like it's on rails. I literally never have body roll. There are no curves on public roads that I can take at speeds that will induce body roll without risking jail time.

6. I'm planning on doing a 3 way comparison of all cars one day. Just haven't gotten around to it.

7. I've only had one thing happen so far that wasn't normal maintenance, and it was covered under warranty. PCM died and a new unit had to be sent out from Germany. The scheduled maintenance costs haven't been too bad for a higher end car. Not cheap but everything is relative. Compared to an exotic like a Ferrari the maintenance is cheap. I think the right year 911 or Cayman make great cars to buy and own for life because while they do cost money to maintain they will last a long time. And you won't tire of them like you would an econobox. If you keep the car for a long time then you spread out the purchase cost over a lot of miles.

8. Standard interior with very little options. It has the regular seats with power adjust and the Porsche crests in the headrest. It does have Bose and Nav. It doesn't have extended leather, the fancy adjustable seats, etc. It also doesn't have parking sensors. I learned hard way how useful they can be when my friend parked on my driveway and I hit him, haha.

So you mention road trips in the 911. How much stuff can you cram in the backseat and the frunk?

I recall my Audi/Porsche mechanic saying the 996 parts weren't any more expensive than those for my Audi A4. Of course, the labor for many 911 jobs are where you pay out the wazoo.

9. How's the gearbox+clutch?

10. Yes you're luck you don't have those "winter" things...

11. Acceleration and handling a rear-engined car?

12. How to drive rear-engined car?

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
04/28/2014 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!0

A lot, surprisingly. Because you can cram stuff under the seat backs, on top of them, and you can even lay some stuff flat on the carpet that's behind the seat backs. And you can fit a lot in the frunk if you pack tight. One big advantage of RWD is that you get a bigger frunk.

Some of the 911 parts really aren't that bad. And now that my warranty is up I might switch to an indie shop to get better labor rates. When the car was leased and under warranty I had the dealer do everything.

Orange is absolutely number one. with dem black wheels.

But both of those colors are GT3 RS colors, and to see regular ol' GT3's in orange are rare. In that case I'd prefer Carrera White or Speed Yellow. But really, I think the GT3 looks fantastic in any color and mileage/condition would take priority.

9. Almost perfect. I think the shifting action and clutch feel are 10/10. The only reason I say "almost" is because sometimes the car doesn't want to shift from neutral to first. The dealership looked at it twice and couldn't figure it out. I think it's just a quirk that can't be fixed. It's not a huge deal because it happens very rarely and there is a workaround. The easiest thing to do when it happens is shift into 2nd and then into 1st.

10. Sometimes I wish we did. It never rains here. We're out of water.

11. Acceleration off the line is great with the weight in the back giving you so much traction. The C2 isn't "stupid fast". I've test drive a 997.2 C2S with PDK and it was stupid fast. If you want acceleration that will scare you then save up more for a C2S to get the 3.8L engine. The C2S may have been underrated because the power difference feels like more than Porsche listed. The 991 C2S's engine is an evolution of the last one and it puts out 400HP.

12. It takes time to get used to. I did experience trailing throttle oversteer once when I went into a turn way too fast. That was scary as hell. But since then nothing like that has happened and I know the car's limits a lot better. It's weird cause now that I'm so used to it I'm actually more confident driving the 911 fast than I am a front engine or mid engine car.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
04/28/2014 at 17:03

Kinja'd!!!0

It really depends. Prices can be all over the map based on condition and mileage. Sometimes the used C2S cars are priced a lot higher than the C2. But other times the delta between the price of the used cars is less than the delta between them when new.

If you hold out for a good deal then you'll probably be able to get a nice C2S for a few grand more than a C2. Which was not the case when I got the car used because it was only a year old and you had to pay the full delta (or even more) to get a slightly used C2S.

If you want to be happy for life then save up for a C2S and hold out until you find a rare one with the extended leather option. The interior of that car is super nice and makes you feel like you're in a Ferrari. It's so damn classy. That will be a collectors item for sure. Also the GTS would be sweet as well.

Of course the GT3 or GT3 RS would be awesome but they tend to hold their value pretty well. It's expensive to buy a low-mileage GT3 that looks like it hasn't been tracked.

04/28/2014 at 17:42

Kinja'd!!!0

I think you're right. I haven't checked often. But the last time I checked the prices seemed to be higher than the time I checked before that.

The new GT3 being PDK only and having engine problems probably drove up the value of 997 GT3s.

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > Manuél Ferrari
04/28/2014 at 17:44

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I knew it would happen. Despite the GT3 being manual only, they always sold out, so there must be a reason for that! PDK GT3 is stupid. Leave that to the Turbo models.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
04/28/2014 at 17:48

Kinja'd!!!0

I never realized how few GT3s Porsche made until recently. They're so rare that they always sell out immediately.

I don't mind PDK for the GT3 since it's a track weapon. But I don't think it should be PDK only. Given how much Porsche charges for the car they can afford to calibrate the stick even if the take rate is low. Some people prefer to heel and toe or want the cheaper maintenance of the stick. Some people want PDK. Porsche should offer both since the base car is offered with the stick and the interior therefore doesn't need to be redesigned for it.

04/28/2014 at 20:16

Kinja'd!!!0

How much are the used C2S and C4S cars going for in your area?

You could buy one in CA and drive it home!

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari
04/28/2014 at 20:29

Kinja'd!!!0

A C2S is hovering around $50-60k right now for a really low mileage (<25k) with plenty of models going for $45-50k with a just a few more miles on them. Most C4S' local to me are going for $55-70k but it's really difficult to find a 997 C4S. Plenty of $100k+ 991 C4s locally!

I've never been to Cali before, but that would be one hell of a way to familiarize myself with the car. That would be an amazing experience for me!

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > AM3R
04/28/2014 at 20:37

Kinja'd!!!0

Interesting. The price for the C2S cars seems very reasonable. But if you wanted a C4S then it might be cheaper to buy one in Cali and drive it home. You could make a vacation out of the trip and stop at scenic spots.

If you really need AWD then you should go for a used Audi R8! You can get an R8 V8 6MT for under $100K in CA. And you can get a used R8 V10 6MT for $115-120.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari
04/28/2014 at 21:02

Kinja'd!!!0

I think I can do without AWD. My E90 was a champ besides a battery killed by a week of strangely cold weather.

Don't tempt me with an R8! I'd feel to bad about leaving it parked outside, and I'd regret not spending that money buying a fully loaded E90 M3 through a Euro delivery while I had the chance!

I might have to consider buying from the west coast. Unfortunately, I live in a suburb outside of DC. I love it here, but the plethora of people that buy high end cars like 911's and M3's buy them new, and then DD them into DC until the next gen is released. Local porsche dealers don't want to deal with a 70k mile 997 Carrera, so they send it to auction and keep their stock filled with heavily optioned 991's. It's a great market for those who want to buy new as dealers are always competing, but it's not good for people like me who want to buy gently used 911 or M3.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > AM3R
04/28/2014 at 21:08

Kinja'd!!!0

What happened to the E90?

Are you going to park a Porsche outside! I'd feel bad about that too!

There are so many gently used cars out here. People buy them as second cars and don't drive them much. Or they buy a third car and then it becomes the toy they spend more time with.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari
04/28/2014 at 21:17

Kinja'd!!!0

We had a good week where it would deep to around 0 with a negative wind chill, and then it snowed around a foot and I didn't drive the E90 for a few days as my friend was visiting me and he brought his Range rover. Tried to start it up one day and the steering wheel was locked, nav screen died out on me, and it just shut down on me as I was trying to start it. I jumped it and charged the battery for a little, but I ended up changing the battery the next weekend.

I'll definitely feel horrible about parking the porsche outside, although it'll most definitely be under a cover.

The market is definitely getting better and better as summer is approaching, but I'll be spending a lot more time monitoring ads in Cali.

04/29/2014 at 10:44

Kinja'd!!!1

Poor wording on my part! If I were to get rid of my E90, it would just be to buy an LCI E91 with a manual. That basically means I'll be keeping the E90 for a while haha! Depending on how well the Porsche can handle my commute, I might not need the E90 down the road, but I'll definitely be keeping it for as long as I can.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > AM3R
04/29/2014 at 11:14

Kinja'd!!!0

I'm glad it's not gone!

The E90 and 997 are such good buddies. Hopefully you can add a Porsche and keep both. E90 can for people and things in it. 997 can fit one more person and some things as long as you don't go to Costco or something.

And the funny thing about cars is that when you buy used and spilt the miles between the two you're not really wasting a ton of money. You're just out the maintenance and insurance and a little bit of depreciation. But you don't lose a ton of depreciation since miles matter more than years when you buy a desirable car used, and you can't drive both at the same time. This is especially true with a 997. If you get a good deal and don't put a ton of miles on it then you'll probably be able to sell it later for not much lower than you bought it.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari
04/29/2014 at 15:09

Kinja'd!!!1

Even more reasons why getting another car is a good idea! It's already set in stone that my next car will be a manual transmission performance car, and I'm underwhelmed by the BRZ (it's a great car, but what's the point of buying a 2nd car if it's even slower than my first?) Handling is still one my most important requirements, and the 911 just perfectly aces speed+handling in an attractive package right out the box, while all my plans for a BRZ involve a turbo kit that I'd much rather not deal with.

I've been casually looking at autotrader all day!

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > AM3R
04/29/2014 at 15:18

Kinja'd!!!0

A used 911 would be way better than a new BRZ with a turbo kit. Good call!

I have this crazy idea of stockpiling desirable performance cars. I'm not very good about socking money away for the future. But at least if I start collecting cars then I'll have assets that I can sell at a later date if I need the money. I know most cars depreciate but some eventually appreciate. And even if they don't it's still a form of saving money as they retain some value and can be sold. Money that's blown on other stuff with no value can't be recouped!

crazy that you bring up appreciation, I had this wild idea to buy an Evo X after mitsubishi announced the death of the evo. A low mileage, well kept and well documented model could command some serious money a few years from now..

I'm feeling pretty iffy on how E39 M5's are looking, I was confident in them last year but now it's not looking as great. Cars don't have to be these things that you buy and let depreciate. You could buy a fun, just barely practical car that you love to drive and make money selling it down the road.

Things are looking bad for the E39 M5? I thought values are starting to go up. Everyone and their uncle wants one.

I'm so mad at myself for not buying an E30 M3 a few years back!

The thing with E39's is that it's the last M5 that isn't "crazy" (V10 crazy) to maintain, which means that enthusiasts are willing to buy high mileage examples as DD or weekend warriors as they tend to be well documented, so you know what you're getting into. An e39 M5 with 125k miles on it can be had for around $12k easily on m5board. This unfortunately makes it a little harder to sell those <50k mile models for $30k. With summer approaching it's definitely getting better and better, but it definitely isn't E30 M3 better.

I missed a chance to buy an E30 M3 with 114k on it for $12k, all it needed was a repaint or even a good detailer!! If I could go back in time a few years, I'd kick myself straight in the mouth.

I bet the low mileage M5s will still command over $30K one day. They're still pretty recent cars. Once they're over 15 years old people will desire the < 75K cars to keep as a collectible.

Wow E30 M3 for $12K!!! That would have been an amazing deal!

The only problem with buying a low mileage E39 M5 and saving it is I'd rack up too many miles on it! That E30 was a sweet deal, if I'm remembering right the owner was retiring (some kind of dentist) and was going on a two year trip to the Galapagos Islands. He was getting rid of ALL his cars except, wait for it, his 1980 e21 320is. The car that he said sprouted his love and enthusiasm for BMW. It was apparently the first "nice" car he bought himself.

It is very hard to own a BMW and not put a ton of miles on it because they're just so flexible! That's why it's so hard to find older low-mileage bimmers. People make garage queens out of Porsches and Ferraris all the time. Bimmers not so much.

That's crazy that the E30 owner decided to keep the E21 instead! I guess he cared more about sentimental value than book value.

If you want your next car to have the best chance of appreciating then you should do research on production numbers. Find the rarest performance car you like that you can afford. The 997.1 and 997.2 GT3s seem like really good buys for appreciation. There wasn't a ton of them and everybody wants one. The 997.1 versions are cheaper. If you can hold out for one of those then you can't go wrong. That will definitely be a car that will be worth more in the future.

I've already seen a slight rise in price in 997 GT3's due to all the drama with the 991. Definitely going to see an even higher rise in price in the future. I'm gonna have to start taking a closer look at GT3's... If one pops up in my area it'll be hard to say no!

I know it's crazy! Everyone wants a 997 GT3!

Having M3s has made me really appreciate buying the best version of a car. The M3 is the ultimate 3 series and the GT3 is the ultimate 911 (that isn't a Turbo, which is more mass market and soft). I would love to one day have a warehouse full of M cars, GT3s, and the special versions of Ferrari's mid engine V8 cars.

Here is the best priced 997 GT3 by me:

Seems like even the 996 GT3 is holding its value well:

here's the best priced GT3 near me, and I'd hardly call it near me as it's in New Jersey while I'm in http://m.autotrader.com/vdp.html?id=36…

No worries!

Man these things have held their value well and must be going up.

You can get a clean title F430 for not much more than this with around the same amount of miles if you're willing to buy one with the F1 transmission. The 6MT cars command a bit more since they're more rare.

I think I'd DIE if I had to leave a Ferrari parked ouside! The market for sports cars always dies in the winter over here, then the cars are priced a little high in spring, and once it's the middle of the summer some really great bargains can be found.

I would die too. I couldn't put a 911 outside either! Maybe an old 944 :)

the more and more I shop for another car, the more and more I wish I had a garage!! There's this amazing garage for sale just up the road from house, it's nothing special, but it's got a lift and space for around 8 cars if I store some on the lifts. It used to be owned by a tint shop that went out of business. I always fantasize about owning it and storing all my fun cars there as it really isn't even a 5 minute walk, and I could always keep the winter car I'd be DD'ing parked in front of my house.

Looks like it's time for me to go buy that lotto ticket!

That would be awesome!

And dangerous, haha. Sometimes I wish I still lived in my old house with the 1 car garage. That helped keep my spending under control :)

Yeah, only having 2 parking spaces in front of my house really helps keep my "budget" in check. Why buy a $100k car when I can sell my house and use that extra money to buy myself a house with a garage?

Unfortunately there's also this paved area that I can see from my backyard that can be used to park many, maaaaaany cars... I just can't win!

Definitely go for a house first. What would a decent house in your area with a 2 or 3 car garage go for?

that's where it gets interesting in this hot area of Northern Virginia. I live in a end unit townhouse, 3 bed rooms, 3.5 bathrooms, finished basement, all that other good stuff and a house in my neighborhood sold for $390-something 4 months ago. Optimistically I could sell for $400 or maybe a little more if I'm lucky. I could go 2 ways to get a 2-3 car garage: buy a ~&500k luxury townhouse that's recently built or spend $570 to well over a million buying a nicely sized single family house (obviously out of budget, but it's crazy how expensive the houses can get just 10 minutes down the road from me.)

Yeah living 20 minutes from DC has it's pros and cons!

The twisty roads I like to cruise on the weekends take me past some million dollar mansions, it's great motivation to work harder haha! Especially when you see the brand new GT3 in the driveway! Saw that getting towed a while ago and man was it a solemn sight.

Reading that thread makes me want meteor gray!

I'd love a white or a black 997. They both just look so right! What color is yours?
